Aranmula Metal Mirror - History

Bring good luck wealth and prosperity to your home shop office and life.

The little village of Aranmula is one place which leaves up to the hype of Kerala Tourism’s sales pitch of God’s Own Country located on the banks of the holy river Pamba. Aranmula is also home to a waning handicraft tradition which is a technological marvel in it’s own right.

The Aranmula Kannadi or Aranmula Metal Mirror is made in the village by the traditional craftsmen. It is not made of glass but with bell metal. This is a unique art which is not found anywhere else in the world. The making of the metal mirror is a long process that needs enough patience. The Aranmula Kannadi is an extraordinary metal mirror which was one of the oldest auspicious articles or Ashtamangalyam set that made up a bride’s wedding trousseau. The manufacture of the Aranmula Kannadi has been zealously guarded secret of all, but a handful surviving artisans. Aranmula Kannadi or Aranmula Metal Mirror is a special type of mirror produced at Aranmula, a village in the state of Kerala in India. These unique metal mirrors are the result of Kerala’s rich cultural and metallurgical traditions.

The British Museum in London has a 45cm tall Aranmula Metal Mirror in its collection. The Origins of the Aranmula Metal Mirrors are linked with the famous Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple. Legend has it that 8 families of experts in temple arts and crafts were brought by the royal chief of Aranmula to work in the Parthasarathy temple centuries ago. The artisans are said to have sampled on this technique while they we making a crown for their deity. The temple chief was so delighted with this mirror and he included it among the 8 auspicious items used in worship in the temple and it has ever since been the “idol of mirror”. In puranas, it has been described as the mirror of Goddess Parvathi.

The procedure and metallurgy is now only known to single family in Aranmula. To achieve the highly reflective surface the finished mirrors needs be polished for one or two days. As an unusual and unique  product this metal mirror, a product of Aranmula near Chengannur, Pathanamthitta district in Kerala, is made out of an alloy of Copper and tin. The polished face of the metal normally resembles glass but also has the same ability to reflect images clearly. This product is grafted by the unique bell metal artisans who retain still today, the secret art of obtaining and mirror like reflection out of the bell metal. Mud from the local paddy fields is used to make the mould. To cast the mirror, the technique followed is the cire-perdue or lost wax method of casting. The bell metal mirror is given a coating of metallic powder mixed with a special oil. The artisan then laboriously rubs the metal with a Hessian cloth for several days to attain a mirror like lustre.
